Two women have died following a jet ski incident in Utah. Their bodies were found after a three-day search of Sand Hollow Reservoir, according to the Utah Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.
Search and discovery
On Tuesday, September 15, at around 4:30 p.m. local time, two women were reported missing at the reservoir. They were last seen in the southern portion of the reservoir on a jet ski. It was reported that life jackets were not worn.
After three days of searching, the bodies of both women were located. The cause of the jet ski crash is not yet known, but alcohol is considered a potential contributing factor. One individual is in custody relating to the incident, though no further details have been provided.
Police statements
An initial police report read: "About 4:30 PM a report was made about 2 missing individuals at Sand Hollow Reservoir. The Utah Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, with assistance from Hurricane Police Department, Washington County Search and Rescue, is currently conducting the search for the two missing females last seen in the southern portion of the reservoir on a jet ski. It was reported that life jackets were not worn."
The report added: "Alcohol is considered a potential contributing factor and one individual is in custody relating to this incident. Officials are asking members of the public to avoid the operational area located at the South Beach. This is an ongoing operation and investigation."
Operation concluded
In an update, the force wrote: "At approximately 5:00 PM search teams located the second missing female, who was confirmed deceased. This concludes the search operation. The Utah Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division extends condolences to family and friends. The incident remains under investigation at this time."
The division thanked Washington County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue, Hurricane City Police Department, State Bureau of Investigation, the Utah Highway Patrol Dive Team, Sanpete County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Sevier County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, the Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau, and Utah State Parks Sand Hollow Staff for their responses. The incident remains under investigation.
