Chart-topping singer Anne-Marie has made a startling confession about her behaviour in past romantic relationships, labelling herself a 'psycho girlfriend' before finding happiness with her husband, rapper Slowthai.
From 'Psycho Girlfriend' to Married Bliss
The 34-year-old artist, who married musician Slowthai, 31, in a Las Vegas ceremony in 2022, revealed her past insecurities stemmed from being cheated on. Speaking on the Mad, Sad & Bad podcast hosted by Paloma Faith, Anne-Marie admitted to constantly scrutinising her ex-partners' phones.
'I think in all my previous relationships, I have been a psycho girlfriend,' she told Faith. 'I had this terrible urge to not be mugged off in relationships because I was so mugged off in school.'
She described a cycle of distrust, explaining she was 'constantly looking through their phones, and like waiting to find something', and invariably she would discover evidence of infidelity. The singer, now a mother to two-year-old daughter Seven and baby son Forever Sugar, born in May, said her insecurity led her to believe boyfriends' lies because she didn't want the truth to be real.
The Inspiration Behind the Hits and a New Struggle
While Anne-Marie has never publicly named her ex-boyfriends, she confirmed they inspired some of her biggest songs, including the break-up anthems 'Ciao Adios' and 'Alarm'. Her journey to contentment, however, was later challenged by motherhood.
In a separate, candid discussion with Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2, the star opened up about a secret battle with post-natal anxiety and depression following the birth of her first child. 'I actually had anxiety so bad when I first had Seven and I didn't want to be left alone,' she shared.
Anne-Marie said she was unaware of post-natal anxiety, only knowing about depression, and experienced the latter about six months after her daughter's birth. This period led her to return to therapy, which she now attends once a week after initially believing she no longer needed it.
Finding Strength and a Path Forward
Reflecting on her mental health journey in a heartfelt Instagram post, Anne-Marie acknowledged the last two years had been tumultuous. 'My head has been all over the place. I've been pregnant and breastfeeding for over 2 years,' she wrote.
She credited therapy and her support network for pulling her through, stating: 'I battled with post natal depression and post natal anxiety, and therapy (yet again) and the people around me pulled me through it. Now I'm back. I'm strong and I'm excited.'
The singer also teased her musical comeback, signalling a return to touring now she feels stronger. Her story highlights the often-hidden challenges of perinatal mental health, which affects up to one in five women and one in ten men during pregnancy or the first year after childbirth.
