Sir Brian May has indicated that Queen could follow in the footsteps of Abba Voyage by developing an AI-powered hologram show. The Queen guitarist, 78, told the Big Issue that he and drummer Roger Taylor are exploring technology to reunite the band's original line-up, including the late Freddie Mercury and retired bassist John Deacon.
May said: “Freddie is still alive through the music that we listen to all the time. In a sense, John is still with us in the same way, but now we have so many other opportunities.” He added that immersive venues like The Sphere in Las Vegas could offer fans a modern experience of Queen as they were in their prime.
However, Taylor, 76, expressed mixed feelings after attending the Abba Voyage show in London. He said: “I had a good time. I enjoyed it, I didn’t find the actual projections that convincing. I do think technology now has come so much further since the Abba show started, I think a lot more can be done.”
Rumours of a Queen hologram show intensified after the company managing Mercury’s back catalogue filed a trademark for his name in 3D and VR. Representatives for Queen previously said there was “nothing to say” on the matter, but May and Taylor’s recent comments suggest active development.
Taylor added that Mercury would be “thrilled” the band’s work remains relevant, and noted: “We haven’t finished yet, we can play fine, but we are getting older, and so we’re just looking at all the options.” Queen have scored six UK number one singles and ten UK number one albums, with hits including Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are the Champions.
