The Terror 'even better' than Below, Netflix fans told

Netflix viewers who have finished the new mystery thriller Below are being directed to a 2018 series called The Terror, which has even higher ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. The supernatural horror is available to stream on NOW.

Below, a fresh supernatural series starring Josh Hartnett, landed on the streaming platform last week and has since climbed to the top of the most-watched chart. Set in a remote town called Snook's Arm, the drama follows a dedicated fisherman and father (Hartnett) who must protect his children and neighbours when a mysterious sea creature terrorises the tight-knit community.

A higher Rotten Tomatoes score

According to Rotten Tomatoes scores, The Terror is 'even better' than the Netflix series. The 2018 show has a rare 94% score, while Below has a less impressive 87% rating.

The series is named after Dan Simmons' 2007 book of the same title, which also provides the story for the first season. It tells a fictionalised version of the real lost expedition of British Royal Navy Officer Captain Sir John Franklin in 1845. After leaving England on a mission to explore uncharted waters, two ships find themselves frozen and trapped in ice, and those onboard must fight for survival while being stalked by a mysterious entity.

What viewers say

A synopsis for the show reveals: "As things worsen and civilized behaviour disintegrates in favour of survival at any cost, the crew must simultaneously battle the elements, the supernatural, and eventually themselves."

The thriller has three seasons in total, but each series takes on a different story. While the other instalments captivated some viewers, season one is better suited for fans of Below.

Viewers have shared glowing reviews for the series, with many hailing it as one of the best thrillers to come out in recent years. "One of The Top Twenty Television Shows not only this decade: but indeed this Century so-far," shared one fan. Someone else raved: "The show draws you in immediately. After only two episodes it's the only thing on right now, for me, that's a must-watch. The characters are well-written and multi-dimensional. The story is intriguing."

A third viewer shared their own verdict, commenting: "Grim, grisly & utterly gripping," while a fourth added: "I binge-watched Season One, couldn't stop. Amazing performances." A final fan agreed with the high praise, saying: "One of those series which will have an impact on you for ever. A masterpiece!!!"

The Terror is available to stream on NOW.
