The Crown actor Isaac Rouse has been cast as a teenage James Bond in an upcoming audio adaptation, ahead of the ongoing search for Daniel Craig's big-screen successor.
Rouse, known for playing Ollie Chadwyck-Healey in three episodes of Netflix's The Crown and Charlie Bucket in Sam Mendes' West End production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, will voice 007 in Young Bond: SilverFin. The casting was revealed in a trailer released by Big Finish Productions on Wednesday, October 14, ahead of the audio drama's debut on October 29.
Adaptation of Charlie Higson's 2005 novel
The production is based on Charlie Higson's 2005 novel SilverFin, which explores Bond's formative years as a student at Eton College in the 1930s. The story follows a young Bond as he begins to develop the skills that will eventually make him Britain's most famous spy, long before his martinis, Aston Martins and signature introductions.
The original novel was the first instalment in Higson's Young Bond series, imagining the iconic character before joining MI6. It was praised by critics, with The Guardian describing it as a book worth reading even for those who weren't already fans of the franchise. Higson has since returned to the world of 007 with King Zero, a new Bond novel released in the UK this year.
Big-screen Bond search continues
Rouse's casting does not end the search for Craig's successor. The next big-screen Bond remains a closely guarded secret, nearly five years after Craig's final appearance in 2021's No Time to Die. Actors linked to the role include Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Harris Dickinson and Slow Horses star Jack Lowden.
Lowden recently emerged as a contender after Richard Osman claimed on his podcast The Rest Is Entertainment that the Scottish actor was being 'strongly considered'. 'Someone told me for definite who the new Bond is the other day, but I mean that's happened before,' Osman told listeners. 'The name I've heard is Jack Lowden.' He added: 'It is definitively not a "he's definitely got it" thing. He is definitely being strongly considered. I think he'd be amazing.'
Turner, also repeatedly tipped for the part, insisted he knew as much as everyone else about the casting process. 'I know as much as you do – really, I know as much as you do,' he told The Hollywood Reporter. 'Even your best friends ask you, people text you that you haven't spoken to for 10 years – and you know nothing! It is such a weird thing of something happening and nothing happening at all. I genuinely know nothing. I just find it quite amusing.'
Timeline and next film details
Producer Amy Pascal previously suggested fans could have an answer before the end of 2026. Asked about the timeline for a casting announcement, she told Deadline: 'I would say the end of the year is a good bet. We are being really, really methodical.' She also hinted the next Bond could be a significant departure from Craig's interpretation, saying: 'Daniel Craig is a hard act to follow. And it's got to be something really different that is a stirring and exciting and different.'
The next film will mark a new era after Amazon MGM Studios assumed creative control from longtime Bond custodians Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson. Denis Villeneuve has been confirmed to direct, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight writing the screenplay. With the film still in development, audiences could wait until at least 2028 to see the next 007 in action.
In the meantime, Bond fans can get acquainted with a new incarnation of the legendary spy when Young Bond: SilverFin arrives on October 29.
