Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, has hinted that a remaster of the beloved video game The Simpsons Hit and Run is in the works. Speaking at a panel at D23, Disney's convention held in Los Angeles over the weekend, Groening responded to a fan's question about a possible sequel.
According to reports, current show runner Matt Selman began by saying, "That would certainly be a treat." Groening then added, "Without speaking out of turn, I think the original game is coming back in some form." Selman quickly tried to temper expectations by adding, "Or not," but Groening's comment was already seen as a strong hint.
Fan Demand and Rights Issues
The Simpsons Hit and Run, released for PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox, is widely regarded as one of the best Simpsons games ever made. It featured open-world segments of Springfield with GTA-inspired gameplay, allowing players to control several characters from the show.
Fans have demanded a remaster or remake for years, but rights complications have prevented any such release. Now, it appears those issues may have been resolved, with a re-release project reportedly underway at Activision.
Previous Hints and Expectations
In June, VGC's Jordan Middler claimed on the publication's podcast that "the one that everyone's absolutely desperate for is happening" when discussing Activision's upcoming remaster projects. Combined with Groening's recent comments, this has all but confirmed that fans may soon return to Springfield.
An official announcement and release date are still awaited, with speculation pointing to Gamescom Opening Night Live next week as a possible venue for the reveal.
