Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, the upcoming prequel set 15 years before Innocence, trades stealth for frenetic swordplay and a grapple hook, and the change is working. During a hands-on preview of Chapters 5 and 6, the action-focused approach sold me on this new direction for the series.
A New Protagonist and Setting
Players control Sophia, a younger version of the fan-favourite pirate captain, who leaves medieval France for a mysterious island in Crete. Alongside companion Leni, she unravels the island's secrets using a minotaur sphere that shoots beams of light to solve puzzles. The island itself, Minotaur Island, becomes a character in its own right, with ruins and trials that challenge the player without becoming frustrating.
According to the preview, the game's puzzles are reminiscent of Asobo Studio's prior work, requiring careful beam guidance and platform sequencing. The fifth chapter alone had me scratching my head but never for long, and each solved puzzle felt rewarding.
Combat Overhaul
The biggest departure from previous Plague Tale games is the combat system. Sophia, a smuggler-turned-pirate warrior, does not sneak; she fights. The system includes parrying yellow-flashed heavy attacks and dodging red-hued unblockable strikes. The grapple hook allows her to pull enemies in from a distance, Scorpion-style, leading to devastating close-quarters beatdowns. Pulling enemies off ledges can also kill them instantly. Additionally, Sophia can grab and fling environmental objects at foes with a single button press.
"The combat here is surprisingly in-depth and satisfying," the preview notes. "Closing distance so quickly helps avoid any potential lulls in the conflict."
Story and Characters
The narrative introduces a compelling villain, Faro, who appears at the end of Chapter 5, chewing scenery and pursuing Sophia for personal reasons. The game also features flashbacks to Ancient Greece, where players control Theseus, promising a century-spanning story. Leni, the companion, is already proving to be engaging, though the preview hopes she has more puzzle involvement later.
The preview emphasizes that newcomers can enjoy Resonance without prior Plague Tale experience, though playing Innocence and Requiem is recommended. The game's identity stands on its own, focusing on action and exploration rather than the rat-swarm stealth of earlier titles.
Release and Performance
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is scheduled to launch on PS5, Xbox, and PC on August 24, 2026. The preview build showed some rough edges typical of AA games, but the core combat and puzzle mechanics impressed. "I’m all in on seeing where this adventure on Minotaur Island leads to when the full game launches," the preview concludes.
