Netflix confirms Inbetweeners reboot with original cast

Netflix has confirmed that production has started on a third film in The Inbetweeners franchise, The Inbetweeners 3, with the original cast returning to reprise their roles.

The streaming giant announced the news on September 7, describing the new film as "a continuation" of the sitcom and its subsequent films. The original Channel 4 series followed four awkward teenage boys and aired three seasons between 2008 and 2010.

Original cast and creators return

Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas will all reprise their iconic roles as Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland and Simon Cooper respectively. Show creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris will also return to write and direct the film.

The series previously spawned two feature-length films: The Inbetweeners Movie in 2011, which followed the boys on a lads' holiday after finishing school, and The Inbetweeners 2 in 2014, which saw them reunite to visit Jay during his gap year.

Teaser reveals car and release update

Netflix posted a 40-second clip announcing the production news, showing an older Will, Simon, Neil and Jay getting into Simon's now rusty yellow Fiat with one red door - a vehicle that featured in memorable moments throughout the show, including an ill-fated trip to Thorpe Park.

In the teaser, Simon repeatedly attempts to start the ignition and fumes: "Oh, for f***'s sake," as the boys smile knowingly. The number three is visible in the dirt on the back window.

Discussing the upcoming film, Beesley and Morris said: "It's been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we're going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans."

Fans have reacted enthusiastically to the announcement, with one commenting "Can I get a hallelujah," another pleading "PLEASE keep it the same as it always was," and a third saying "Can't wait for it!" A release date for The Inbetweeners 3 is yet to be announced.
