Netflix has unveiled the cast and release window for its upcoming true crime limited series about the murder of JonBenét Ramsey. The show, titled The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, will debut exclusively on the streaming platform this winter, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the case that captivated the world.
Star-Studded Cast Announced
Melissa McCarthy will portray Patsy Ramsey, the mother of the slain six-year-old, while Clive Owen takes on the role of John Ramsey, the father. McCarthy, known for comedic roles in Bridesmaids and The Heat, earned an Oscar nomination for her dramatic turn in Can You Ever Forgive Me. Owen, a Coventry native, is celebrated for his performances in Children of Men, Sin City, and Gemini Man.
The cast also includes Emily Mitchell as JonBenét Ramsey, Garrett Hedlund as Det. Steve Thomas, Alison Pill as Det. Linda Arndt, Shea Whigham as Alex Hunter, Owen Teague as Shane Edwards, Clifton Collins Jr. as Det. Tom Trujillo, and Jaime Ray Newman as Amelia Hunt. Additional roles feature Rory Cochrane as John Eller, Chris Bauer as Chief Tom Koby, Will Patton as Lou Smith, Jeremy Bobb as Pete Hofstrom, John Billingsley as Santa Bill McReynolds, and Josh Stamberg as Reed Hunt.
The Case That Shocked the World
On December 26, 1996, John and Patsy Ramsey discovered their daughter JonBenét missing from their Boulder, Colorado home, with a ransom note left behind. Later that day, John found her body in the basement; she had been sexually assaulted and strangled. The cause of death was asphyxia by strangulation associated with craniocerebral trauma, ruled a homicide.
Police initially focused on the Ramsey family, believing the ransom note was written by Patsy. In 1999, a grand jury recommended charges against the Ramseys for placing the child in a threatening situation and hindering the investigation. However, a new district attorney in 2002 pursued an intruder theory, and DNA evidence excluded the Ramseys as contributors. By 2008, they were fully cleared, but the case remains unsolved.
Production and Release
The series is produced by Richard LaGravenese, known for Behind the Candelabra. It promises to explore the case from multiple angles, delving into the speculation and unresolved grief surrounding the tragedy. While an exact release date has not been announced, it is expected to premiere around the 20th anniversary of the crime, which falls on December 26.
Netflix has not yet confirmed the specific number of episodes or the exact premiere date, but the series is set to land this winter. The announcement comes amid a surge in true crime content, with Netflix's Monster franchise, featuring Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer and Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein, drawing both massive viewership and criticism for potentially glorifying killers.
