Rockstar's GTA 6, delayed to November 19, has not crushed video game sales this year, as several major titles have achieved significant milestones. Despite the crowded release calendar, many games have performed unexpectedly well.
Record Sales Across Multiple Titles
Remedy announced that Control Resonant has achieved one million sales, beating Alan Wake 2 as the fastest-selling game in the studio's history. This milestone, generally regarded as the minimum requirement to be considered a 'hit', has been a repeat occurrence across many titles in recent months.
Onimusha: Way Of The Sword hit over one million sales in one day, while Ace Combat 8: Wings Of Theve reached the same milestone after a week, becoming the fastest-selling entry. Star Wars Zero Company and The Blood Of Dawnwalker, both released in August, also hit the same heights.
Impact on Major Releases
According to Alinea Analytics, these titles have not impacted titans like Marvel's Wolverine, which is estimated to have sold over two million copies. While the expectation might be higher for a Sony first-party title, it remains a solid launch figure.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer has been riding high above EA Sports FC 27 in the Steam weekly top sellers, and Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave has been popular in Japan. Halloween: The Game is estimated to have sold over one million copies across all platforms, based on Alinea Analytics.
Mixed Results and Lessons
The only murky cases are Silent Hill: Townfall and Gears Of War: E-Day. Konami hasn't published sales data for Silent Hill: Townfall, which didn't seem to make much impact on Steam or console stores. Gears Of War: E-Day's success is difficult to assess within the context of Xbox Game Pass and its Xbox Series X/S console exclusivity.
These results suggest that the gaming audience has more time and money to spend on titles each month than previously thought. A vast spread of titles and genres can coexist with little consequence, challenging expectations that executives might have about their games' realistic achievements.
This dynamic may change with GTA 6, expected to be the biggest launch for any piece of entertainment ever, but the preceding months show that no single game carries the all-consuming vortex it once did.
