Sports Interactive has unveiled a sweeping overhaul to the match engine, training ground, and tactical systems for Football Manager 27, promising virtual bosses greater control ahead of its global release on 10 November.
Enhanced movement and skill moves
Building on an expanded partnership with sports tracking specialists Hawk-Eye Innovations, the London-based developer has combined real-world match footage with bespoke motion capture to transform how footballers move and react. The upgrades introduce new skill moves - including body feints, elasticos, and heel chops - alongside a complete recalibration of player pace and acceleration.
By benchmarking movement against real-life match data, developers have eliminated the unnatural bursts of recovery speed and sharp turns seen in previous editions. Stamina now plays a far more decisive role over 90 minutes, visibly affecting a player's body language after lung-bursting runs and making late substitutions more impactful.
Rebuilt defending and tactical tweaks
One-on-one defending has been rebuilt into a more dynamic duel featuring realistic jockeying movements and body positioning, placing greater weight on core attributes such as marking and anticipation. At the other end of the pitch, players will make more varied runs into the penalty area. Managers can also issue specific instructions for attacking the box, ordering players to arrive late, challenge the defensive line directly, or target the near post, far post, or central zones.
During matches, a brand-new 'Tactical Tweaks' system allows bosses to deploy bundled adjustments from the touchline in real time without pausing the action.
Managers can instantly instruct wingers to swap flanks, send the goalkeeper up for a last-gasp corner, or order the squad to exploit width. This works alongside a rebuilt 'Shouts' feature that directly influences player mentality and body language, as well as a customisable interface featuring heat maps and action zones.
New tactical effectiveness metric and training revamp
Away from matchdays, FM27 introduces 'Tactical Effectiveness', a new metric replacing the old familiarity rating that connects training, tactics, and recruitment. The system evaluates how well-equipped a squad is to execute a manager's blueprint, factoring in player ability and tactical complexity.
While simple 'plug-and-play' systems yield instant results, opposition sides will figure them out quicker, whereas complex philosophies take longer to master on the training pitch—making it a risk to deploy intricate counter-pressing in the lower leagues. This metric also extends to scouting reports, showing how seamlessly transfer targets will fit into a club's system.
To support this, training has been moved to the main navigation bar with a cleaner interface, multi-week load tracking, and the return of copy-and-paste schedules.
The old training units have been scrapped in favour of match-focused preparation for senior squads—allowing managers to drill specific phases like building from the back or intense pressing—while youth and individual training remain focused on long-term attribute development. International managers will also be able to plan training camps during national team call-ups.
