Corrie legend's exit 'sealed' 39 years after debut, fans gutted

Coronation Street could be saying goodbye to a soap legend 39 years after her debut appearance. Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) has endured a turbulent few months on the cobbles. Presently, she finds herself locked up after killing evil Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) in self-defence.

Sarah's murder trial begins next week

Sarah had slain Theo in April this year when she struck him with a metal pole atop scaffolding, causing him to plunge over the edge to the ground beneath. Sarah subsequently enlisted the assistance of former flame and confidant Gary Windass (Mikey North) to conceal the crime. Despite her boyfriend Kit Green's (Jacob Roberts) efforts to help her evade justice, Sarah was detained on suspicion of murdering Theo.

She has since been remanded in custody - where she has faced a difficult time - and is now awaiting trial, with it recently confirmed that Sarah's court case will commence next week, reports the Daily Star.

Fans predict a brief departure

A fresh promo reveals a petrified Sarah standing in the dock while a voiceover is heard branding her a "cold-blooded murderer" and a frightened Sarah states "I think we need to prepare for the worst".

Discussing the storyline, actress Tina O'Brien commented: "Sarah is absolutely terrified; she has been desperate for this day to come but the reality of being brought up from the cells and standing in the dock is overwhelming. As the prosecution case is laid out she is not sure things will go her way."

Yet despite fans being convinced that Sarah will be acquitted and freed, they suspect a brief departure from the cobbles could be imminent.

Viewers speculate on Sarah's future

On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one viewer speculated: "Can't see Sarah getting sent to prison, but she'll definitely go see Gail when she's back," alluding to her mother Gail (Helen Worth) now residing in France following her departure from the soap in 2024.

A second agreed: "Yeah ofc, that's where they all go." A third added: "David was just there as well." Another viewer suggested: "Don't think they'll get rid of Sarah by sending her to prison." A fifth observed: "Usually the actors take a break after a big storyline anyway."

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
