Disney Plus has released a new documentary titled 'Clown Panic' that explores the 2016 global phenomenon of reported clown sightings, which escalated into mass hysteria and worldwide panic. The release, available to stream now, has already left viewers terrified, with one person admitting it "looks beyond creepy."
Documentary explores 2016 clown sightings
The documentary transports viewers back to 2016, when reports of sinister clowns lurking in the woods spread from America into a worldwide frenzy, fuelled by viral videos, news reports, and copycat behaviour, also seen in the UK and other countries.
An official synopsis reads: "When children in a small South Carolina community report seeing clowns hiding in the woods in 2016, few believe them. But as sightings spread across the country, panic escalates into school lockdowns, police investigations and a nationwide media frenzy."
Archive footage and interviews
The synopsis continues: "Featuring chilling archive footage, viral internet videos and revealing interviews with witnesses, law enforcement, clowns and cultural commentators, Clown Panic examines the collision of fear, social media and modern America at a moment of deep national anxiety."
It adds: "Darkly funny, unsettling and unexpectedly emotional, the film uncovers how a bizarre urban legend spiraled into a global moral panic that has echoes that resonate today."
