Developer Yona's acclaimed visual novel and Roger has launched on Nintendo Switch 2 and mobile phones, following its award-winning PC and Switch debut in July 2025. The game, which earned a BAFTA nomination in the Game Beyond Entertainment category, continues to impress with its unique approach to storytelling through gameplay.
A Story Told Through Gameplay
and Roger places players in the role of a young girl named Sofia, who wakes up to find her father missing and a stranger sleeping on her sofa. The eerie atmosphere intensifies as the stranger dismisses Sofia's concerns and pressures her to take unspecified medicine. The game masterfully conveys Sofia's growing distress through oppressive music, a dark color palette, and deliberately vague minigames that force players to experiment without instructions.
Unlike typical minigame collections, and Roger never tells players what to do. Simple tasks like brushing teeth require clicking unmarked buttons, leading to mistakes such as brushing without toothpaste. During Sofia's most panicky moments, the game adds non-functional buttons, requiring frantic clicking to progress.
Moments of Levity and Calm
The game balances its tension with lighter sections featuring brighter colors, softer music, and relaxing activities like vacuuming or navigating to a bakery. These respites briefly soothe players before the darker mood gradually returns, leaving both Sofia and the player unnerved.
According to the developer, the goal was to 'express the protagonist’s situation, the setting, and emotions not through words, but through gameplay itself.' This philosophy shines throughout the experience.
Symbolism and Emotional Impact
The story's true nature unfolds subtly, with each minigame symbolizing deeper themes. The ending becomes more explicit but still delivers a poignant revelation that reframes the entire experience. Even on a second playthrough, the emotional weight can bring tears, with many players reportedly left in tears by the credits.
At just under an hour, and Roger offers almost no replay value, but its brevity is intentional. The game is designed as a one-sitting experience, and its low price of £4.29 (currently discounted to £3) makes it an easy recommendation.
Controls and Platform
On Switch 2, the game controls well with analogue sticks, but the console's mouse controls are ideal. Surprisingly, there is no touchscreen support, though the minigames would suit it well. The game is also available on PC, iOS, and Android.
Verdict
and Roger achieves what few games can: telling a story that could only work as an interactive experience. Its subtle storytelling, symbolic minigames, and emotional depth make it a must-play. While its ending loses some subtlety and replay value is nil, these are minor flaws in an otherwise brilliant package.
