A 35-year-old Canadian woman has died at the Tomorrowland festival in Belgium, days after a fire destroyed the main stage. The woman became unwell at the festival grounds on Friday night and was resuscitated by emergency services, but later died in hospital.
The Antwerp public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation. A statement said: 'Initial findings indicate strong evidence of a drug-related death. An autopsy and a thorough toxicology examination will provide definitive answers.'
This is the second tragedy to hit the festival this week. On Wednesday, the main stage was engulfed in flames and black smoke, with fireworks exploding as the fire spread to nearby woodland. No festival-goers were present, but 1,000 employees were evacuated. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Organisers built an alternative main stage, and the festival opened two hours late on Friday. Popular DJs including Martin Garrix, David Guetta, and Swedish House Mafia are scheduled to perform.
Festival spokesperson Debby Wilmsen expressed condolences, saying: 'She received first aid and was then transferred to the University Hospital of Antwerp. We were informed she passed away there.'
