Scarycrow Trail returns to Northumberland estate for Halloween 2026
Scarycrow Trail returns to Northumberland for Halloween

The annual Scarycrow Trail at Ford & Etal in Berwick Upon Tweed will return next week, running from October 26 to November 1. The event, now in its 19th year, invites visitors to explore the estates' villages and country lanes to spot a range of frightening, funny and 'fangtastic' creations.

Trail details and how to take part

Scarycrow Trail Sheets, which help visitors find and identify the displays, can be collected from local attractions, shops and tearooms around Ford & Etal Estates. They can also be downloaded online from October 24.

Visitors can score the Scarycrows as they follow the trail, leaving completed sheets in collection boxes at Etal, Heatherslaw and Ford. The 2026 winner will be announced on November 9.

Charity and accessibility

The event is free, but the community hopes visitors will donate to Berwick's Cancer Cars, a local charity providing free transport for people with a confirmed cancer diagnosis. Collection boxes will be available alongside the trail sheets.

Most of the trail can be walked, though some out-of-the-way locations may require driving. There is no set route, but Trail Maps help locate all displays. The Scarycrows are best seen in the daytime.

Additional activities and visitor guidance

Guided 'Ghostly Walks' will take place around Ford Village, meeting outside the Village Shop at 6pm on October 26, 28 and 30. This free event welcomes donations for Ford Christmas Lights.

Visitors are asked not to touch the Scarycrows. The trail is accessible to buggies and wheelchairs, dogs are welcome, and free parking is available in Etal, Heatherslaw and Ford, with disabled parking at all three locations.
