Pete Doherty returns to 8,000-calorie breakfast café

Libertines frontman Pete Doherty has returned to the seaside café where he famously devoured an 8,000-calorie mega-breakfast. The indie legend left music fans in disbelief back in August 2018 after taking on the eating challenge at the Dalby Cafe in Cliftonville, Margate.

Historic 2018 Challenge

Pete stunned punters when he successfully ate four eggs, four rashers of bacon, four sausages, a quarter-pounder burger, chips, hash browns, onion rings, bubble and squeak, beans, mushrooms, two doorstop slices of toast and a cuppa in 19 minutes and 30 seconds. By wiping his platter clean with just 30 seconds to spare, the musician bagged the £18 feast completely free of charge.

The Can't Stand Me Now singer has now headed back to his old stomping ground alongside comedian Josh Pugh for an episode of YouTube hit The Pete Doherty Show, where Josh attempted to follow in the rocker's footsteps.

Opening Up on Victory

Opening up on his historic 2018 victory in a teaser clip, Pete confessed that conquering the mountain of fry-up grub was secretly one of the proudest moments of his life. "It's funny you know," Pete said. "I don't like to say it out loud, but the truth is that it felt important at the time. I felt I got respect in a way I hadn't before."

The indie icon even revealed that six years on from his legendary feat, hard-grafting tradesmen still pull over in the street to hail him as a culinary hero. He revealed that white van men regularly stop their vehicles just to shout out their congratulations on him wolfing down the gut-busting platter.

Co-host's Attempt

Watching co-host Josh prepare to face down the mountain of carbs, Pete insisted the comedian had the fire in his belly to join him in the hall of fame. "He wouldn't have started it if he didn't think he could do it," Pete said. "I think he's got what it takes and they knew that when he first came in."

"That's why they gave him more chips than they usually give you, as if to say, 'Come on then, this isn't a game. This isn't some cheap promotional stunt.'"

Fan Reaction

Back in 2018, the cafe shared a photo on Instagram of a dishevelled Pete sitting outdoors proudly sipping a coffee next to an empty plate. The caption read: "Look who popped into the Dalby cafe and attempted the mega breakfast. Only big Pete Doherty. He came, he saw, he conquered, smashed it in 19.30 minutes."

At the time, shocked fans dubbed him an "absolute hero," while others branded the monstrous feast "obscene" as the rockstar narrowly avoided paying for his breakfast by the skin of his teeth.
