Notting Hill Carnival will return to west London's streets this August bank holiday weekend, marking its 60th anniversary. The world's second-largest festival is expected to draw around two million people to W10 for parades, parties, dancing, and food.
Rooted in British Caribbean culture, the festival originated as a response to racial tensions in the 1950s and has become a symbol of unity in the capital. For three days, west London transforms with jerk chicken, mas bands, and calypso music from morning until late.
Dates and Schedule
The carnival takes place over the August bank holiday weekend, from August 29 to 31. Sunday is family day, Monday is 'adults day', and Saturday is quieter, marking the official opening. The UK National Panorama Steel Band Competition is the only ticketed event.
Sunday begins at 6am with J'ouvert, followed by the Children's Day Parade with music, floats, and Dutty Mas. Monday's Adult's Parade starts at 10:30am. Sound systems and live stages run from midday to 7pm on both days, with afterparties across the capital for those wanting to continue.
At 3pm on both Sunday and Monday, there will be a 72-second silence to remember the 72 lives lost in the Grenfell Tower fire and those who have died at the carnival.
Parade Route and Tickets
The parade travels more than three miles from Westbourne Park station, down Westbourne Grove, and back up towards Ladbroke Grove. The official map will be released closer to the weekend.
Attendance is free, but VIP tickets are available in the Grandstand for £30, including a reserved seat and on-site toilet access.
Travel Tips
Several stations become exit-only or close entirely due to overcrowding. Closest stations include Notting Hill Gate, Queensway, Holland Park, Westbourne Park, Ladbroke Grove, and Latimer Road. Travel to slightly further stations like Paddington, Maida Vale, or Kensal Rise and walk in. Buses may terminate early or reroute.
Food and Drink
Over 300 stalls offer Caribbean fare, including jerk chicken, salt fish, curry goat, oxtail stew, and doubles. Jay Dees Catering and Curtis Caribbean are noted favorites. Look for Trinidadian roti and Guyanese pepper pot.
Sound Systems
Music ranges from mas bands to steel bands, soca, and calypso. Recommended sound systems include King Tubby's, Killerwat, Gladdy Wax, and Aba Shanti-I. Linett Kamala, the first female DJ at the carnival, will play at the Trojan 7 x LIN KAM ART stage.
60th Anniversary Events
To celebrate the 60th birthday, heritage and community leaders have organized Notting Hill Carnival 60, offering talks, panels, walks, steel pan yard visits, a sunset cruise on the Thames, rum tastings, and pub meets. Tickets are available via nottinghillcarnival60.co.uk.
