Niall Horan has revealed he wrote his tribute song for fellow One Direction bandmate Liam Payne in just ten minutes as the emotions came pouring out.
A Sudden Loss
Liam tragically passed away in October 2024 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina, and around the same time Niall was writing his fourth studio LP Dinner Party.
The Irish star, 32, admitted that originally he couldn't bring himself to write about his death. However, once he was ready, the track 'End of an Era' practically wrote itself.
A Therapeutic Process
Asked if it was a therapeutic track to write, Niall replied: "It was therapeutic because I didn’t write about it for the whole time I made the album - Probably just trying to push it to the side, keep it away from it."
He went on to say he later re-visited the song, which was originally not about Liam, and re-wrote it completely to be the sweet tribute it is now.
He added: "I had a song called End of an Era that I had written and it was God awful, it was nothing about that and then after his passing it made me re-think about the title and I just started writing again. It took me ten minutes to write the lyrics, because I just knew exactly what I… I got to the point where I knew what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it."
An Uplifting Tribute
Niall explained that it's not a "downer" because he wanted it to celebrate the fond memories he shared with his late pal.
He continued: "It’s kind of like a mixture in the song, it’s a sad song and its nostalgic, and it’s got a bit of both in it. If it's too much of a downer it wouldn't make sense - It’s very sad but I also have very happy memories and I wanted those two emotions in there and it had to feel uplifting as well."
Niall's comments come after it was reported that Liam allegedly smashed a £30,000 Rolex and punched a TV during a chaotic dispute with two sex workers just hours before his fatal hotel fall.
