A food content creator has claimed that most people have been eating Marmite incorrectly their entire lives, insisting it should not be consumed 'raw'. Amy Sheppard, a cookbook author who shares recipes with her millions of TikTok followers, declared: "You have got to stop eating raw Marmite."
Grilled Marmite method
In a video posted on TikTok, Sheppard revealed how she prepares what she calls 'grilled Marmite' or 'baked Marmite'. The process involves taking two slices of bread and toasting one side under the grill. On the untoasted side, she spreads a layer of butter followed by a 'nice, thick layer of Marmite', noting it needs to be thicker than what one would normally add to toast. The slices are then placed back under the grill, Marmite side up, until they are 'golden brown, and crisp and bubbly'.
Sheppard explained the effect of grilling the spread: "When you grill it, it doesn't look much different, does it? But the Marmite goes really sticky and gooey, and has this kind-of chewy, caramelised flavour to it. It's so good." She even suggested that those who dislike Marmite would likely enjoy this combination.
Viewer reactions and pairings
In the caption accompanying the video, Sheppard added: "This is going to change your Sunday morning Marmite toast... Forever." She also suggested the technique would likely "blow your mind".
Eager Marmite enthusiasts were quick to respond in the comments, with one writing: "I eat Marmite every day for brekky. Going to try this." Another commented: "[Be right back], heading to the kitchen to try this immediately."
Others shared their own cherished Marmite pairings, including Marmite with peanut butter and crispy bacon, or Marmite and cheese sandwiches. One user suggested: "Try poached eggs on Marmite on toast..." while another recommended: "Try Marmite on your steak. Cook one side, turn it over then spread it on the cooked side and then leave it to rest as normal mmmm."
