Manchester's Caribbean Carnival has returned for 2026, bringing a sea of colour, music, and even some sunshine to the city. Thousands gathered to watch 11 troupes of dancers and musicians parade through the streets of Whalley Range and Moss Side, starting at 12pm on Saturday, August 8.
Parade highlights
The parade showcased traditional masquerade, soca, calypso, and steelpan performances, filling the area with noise and vibrancy. Prior to the parade, the carnival officially began with J'ouvert, a traditional Caribbean celebration meaning 'daybreak' or 'opening of the day'. This year's J'ouvert was the biggest to date, with 17 troupes participating.
Organisers' message
Julia Burke, Chair and Project Manager of Manchester Carnival Together CIC, said: "Carnival is about honouring the traditions that have been passed down to us, but it is also about making our own traditions as the diaspora. Culture is not something that stands still; it grows with every generation that carries it forward."
She added: "The scale of this year's J'ouvert, the 17 troupes joining our parade, including one travelling from as far as France, shows just how powerful and important this celebration continues to be. We hope everyone comes down to Alexandra Park and celebrates with us."
Five-year milestone
Burke also noted that this year marks five years since Manchester Carnival Together CIC took responsibility for delivering the carnival. She said: "We are incredibly proud of what our team and community have achieved during that time. The reality is that delivering major cultural events is becoming increasingly difficult. Costs continue to rise, funding is stretched and community organisations are being asked to achieve more with fewer resources. However, the need for events like Carnival has never been greater. These are the spaces where our culture is protected, our stories are told and different generations can celebrate together."
Event details
Celebrations at Alexandra Park continue on Saturday until 8pm, and resume on Sunday (August 9) from 12pm to 8pm.
