London Christmas Lights 2026: Key Dates and Locations

London's Christmas lights switch-on season is approaching, with major displays across the West End and beyond preparing to illuminate the capital. From Regent Street's giant angels to Covent Garden's dazzling decorations, the annual events draw millions of visitors each year.

Oxford Street and Carnaby Street

Oxford Street, Europe's biggest shopping street, will be transformed into a Harry Potter-themed Christmas wonderland as part of a new collaboration with HBO Max. This coincides with the launch of the new series Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on December 25 and the opening of the UK's largest official Harry Potter flagship shop. The switch-on date is yet to be confirmed.

Carnaby Street's display, titled 'Press Play on Christmas', will bring "colour, creativity and playful energy" to the cobbled streets with a 90s theme. The switch-on is scheduled for November 4.

Trafalgar Square and Regent Street

Trafalgar Square will receive its annual spruce tree from Oslo, a tradition since 1947 in gratitude for Britain's support for Norway during the Second World War. The tree returns to the square on December 3, with the official lights switch-on date yet to be confirmed.

Regent Street will feature its iconic 'Spirit of Christmas' lights, which have illuminated central London since 2016. The road will be closed to traffic from 5pm to 9pm on switch-on night, November 5.

Bond Street, Covent Garden and St Martin's Lane

Bond Street's 'Crown Jewel Christmas lights' show will run from 4pm to 8pm on November 12, with a live brass band leading a countdown before the lights illuminate at 7pm.

Covent Garden's 'The Theatre of Christmas' returns in November, featuring live festive performances and a "magical" countdown. The switch-on is on November 12.

St Martin's Lane will be illuminated on November 3, with the cast from Into the Woods performing before switching on the Theatre-land inspired lights, alongside a festive choir and food trucks.

Marylebone, Kew Gardens and Other Displays

Marylebone Village will be transformed into a winter wonderland on November 11, led by BBC broadcaster Jo Good, with stalls, family entertainment, and a 55-foot Ferris wheel.

Kew Gardens' Christmas trail returns on November 13, featuring a 3km trail with attractions including the Christmas Cathedral, Fire Garden, and Temperate House light show. Two adult-only evenings are scheduled for December 3 and 9.

Fleet Street's switch-on on November 18 is themed around Dennis the Menace, with a dozen statue installations and two choir performances. Chelsea's events on November 12 include a tree lighting ceremony in Duke of York Square with a 40ft Norwegian spruce, a 1.5km trail in Ranelagh Gardens, and the Firefly Festive Forest with 30 artist-designed trees on Sloane Street.

Leadenhall Market will be decorated with festive garlands and a light tunnel on November 19, with live music and snow flurries. Skate at Somerset House, while not a switch-on event, opens on November 11 with tickets starting at £11.
