Large crowds gathered in Liverpool for a five-day festival marking 50 years of Bengali tradition, faith and community spirit. The Bengali Association of Merseyside and North West England (BAMNE) is celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Liverpool Durga Puja, an event that annually brings together hundreds of visitors from across the UK and beyond.
Festival celebrates Goddess Durga
The Hindu festival celebrates the Goddess Durga and the triumph of good over evil. Beyond its religious significance, it brings generations together to celebrate Bengali traditions, strengthens friendships and shares the culture with the wider community.
The festival is taking place at the Silvestrian Suites on Silvester Street in Vauxhall, where traditional prayers, music, dancing, performances and communal dining are being held.
From 1976 to Golden Jubilee
First celebrated in 1976 at Liverpool's Edge Lane Hindu Temple with the support of a small group of pioneering Bengalis, the event has grown into one of the region's major Bengali cultural celebrations. People travel from across the UK, with some arriving from abroad to celebrate with family and friends, the association said.
The Golden Jubilee honours the founding members, volunteers and supporters whose dedication has kept the association going over five decades. The association is now working to secure a permanent home to support its growing cultural and community activities.
President's message
Mr Sandip Chatterjee, President, said: "Reaching our Golden Jubilee is a tremendous milestone. What began in 1976 through the vision and generosity of a handful of people has grown into a major celebration of faith, culture and togetherness."
He added: "We are grateful to everyone who has contributed over the past fifty years and warmly welcome people from all backgrounds to join us as we celebrate this special occasion."
