Kendal Calling, set in the heart of the Lake District, returned for its 21st year, drawing 40,000 people to Lowther Park near Penrith. Despite its name, the festival has long been held in the north of Cumbria, and this year's event proved bigger and better than ever.
A Festival for Everyone
From teenagers to pensioners, Kendal Calling offers something for everyone. The stunning Lake District backdrop adds to the charm, making it a standout among UK festivals. The party kicked off on Thursday with The Kooks headlining, supported by The Crib, Vanessa Carlton, and Vacant Weekend.
Beyond the main stage, attendees enjoyed a DJ set by Tim Burgess at the Tim Peaks Diner, Rock and Roll Bingo in the Soapbox, and a magical light trail in the Woodlands, complete with a huge illuminated globe. A cinema on site and the Desert Island Disco tent provided even more entertainment.
Weekend Highlights
Friday was action-packed, with Scissor Sisters delivering a memorable performance and Ash taking the Parklands stage. Tim Burgess revealed that 'Girl From Mars' had finally achieved gold status, 30 years after its release. Two Door Cinema Club closed the main stage, while The Coral and Calling Our stage kept the party going until 3am.
Saturday brought an electric atmosphere, with The Hunna playing their final festival gig and The Untold Orchestra performing Beatles hits. Comedy in the Soapbox was headlined by Marcus Brigstocke, and the Chai Wallahs tent showcased acts like Karma Sheen and Omega Nebula. Gabrielle's late-afternoon set was a hit, followed by The Libertines and a spectacular Biffy Clyro headline performance featuring columns of fire and a flame thrower.
A Chilled Finale
Sunday had a relaxed vibe, with a hearty breakfast at Ranch 76 Smokehouse and the traditional fancy dress parade. Primal Scream and Wolf Alice delivered stunning sets, and the weekend concluded with legendary fireworks. The weather was unusually glorious for Cumbria, with only a few night-time showers.
The Deer Lodge camping option offered a touch of luxury with flushing loos and hot showers. Kids Calling kept young ones entertained, and the overall atmosphere was one of joy and community. As one attendee put it, 'See you in the fields in 2027!'
