The National Eisteddfod has announced that its 2028 event will be held in Cardiff, marking the festival's first appearance in the capital in ten years. The announcement has been welcomed by Cardiff Council leaders.
Festival's return to the capital
The 2027 Eisteddfod is set to take place in Glantwymyn, near Machynlleth in Powys, but the 2028 edition will be hosted in Cardiff. The National Eisteddfod is one of Wales' most important cultural occasions, celebrating the Welsh language, arts and culture, and attracting thousands of visitors from across the nation and further afield.
The location announcement is always keenly anticipated, as it brings visitors and businesses to the site and showcases the area. Cardiff's selection marks a significant moment for the city, which last hosted the event a decade ago.
Council leaders respond
Responding to the announcement, the Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Chris Weaver, said: "The National Eisteddfod is the largest and most important celebration of Welsh language and culture in our national calendar and I'm incredibly pleased that, for the first time in a decade, it is returning to our capital city in 2028.
Cardiff has a proud track record of staging major events, and we look forward to welcoming visitors from across Wales and beyond for what is sure to be a memorable and inspiring Eisteddfod."
Cardiff Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, added: "Hosting the National Eisteddfod is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Cardiff's cultural life in all its creative glory, as well as the city's commitment to supporting the Welsh language.
The festival brings people together through music, literature, arts and performance, and we're excited to play our part in making sure there's a warm welcome for every single performer, competitor and visitor in 2028."
