The NOVUM Festival's massive Domino Run finale on Sunday afternoon took an unexpected turn as dominoes fell from the window of The Stand comedy club, a venue more accustomed to jokes than toppling tiles. Audience members attending The Stand's Sunday Service got a front-row seat to the spectacle.
Unexpected Locations on the Route
The Domino Run, one of the most impressive and expertly planned spectacles ever seen in Newcastle city centre, brought the curtain down on this year's NOVUM event in style. While the whole weekend offered plenty to see and do, the dominoes were the highlight, with many curious to see how it would all work and if everything would go to plan.
The first domino fell from a flat in Bewick Court, near Northumberland Street, a location few would have predicted. Moments later, a sizeable crowd at the City Library watched a line of dominoes topple, and onlookers at Grey's Monument also enjoyed a great view.
Indoor and Outdoor Displays
The dominoes were not just positioned outside. The Tyneside Cinema, which was screening The Brutalist at the time, and the Theatre Royal were also used. Drinkers at The Old George saw dominoes tumble in its outdoor courtyard, and another sequence unfolded on The Stand's terrace during the break of the weekly Sunday Service show.
As well as enjoying sets by comedians like Elaine Robertson and Dingus Dingleby, the audience saw dominoes fall from the window of the well-known High Bridge comedy club, starting another leg of the run that ended at the Helix Building near St James' Park.
Other Gathering Points
Other locations where people gathered to watch included outside Blackfriars restaurant, The People's Kitchen, the Assembly Rooms, and High Bridge Works, The Stand's neighbour.
