Cardiff is set to host the 2028 National Eisteddfod, marking the first time in a decade the event will be held in the Welsh capital.
The announcement comes after the conclusion of this year's Eisteddfod in Llantwd, Pembrokeshire. The 2027 event will take place in Glantwymyn, near Machynlleth in Powys.
Council leaders welcome the news
Responding to the announcement, the Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Chris Weaver, said: "The National Eisteddfod is the largest and most important celebration of Welsh language and culture in our national calendar and I'm incredibly pleased that, for the first time in a decade, it is returning to our capital city in 2028.
"Cardiff has a proud track record of staging major events, and we look forward to welcoming visitors from across Wales and beyond for what is sure to be a memorable and inspiring Eisteddfod."
Cardiff Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, added: "Hosting the National Eisteddfod is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Cardiff's cultural life in all its creative glory, as well as the city's commitment to supporting the Welsh language.
"The festival brings people together through music, literature, arts and performance, and we're excited to play our part in making sure there's a warm welcome for every single performer, competitor and visitor in 2028."
Eisteddfod chief executive looks ahead
Eisteddfod chief executive, Betsan Moses, said: "We're really looking forward to starting our work in the Cardiff area and building excitement over the next two years. It's wonderful to know that so many people across the catchment area are ready to play their part and help us create a special week and a memorable project when the Eisteddfod returns to the area.
"We're keen to bring together people from different backgrounds, interests and areas of expertise to be part of the team. By combining experience and new energy, we can work together to create a project and festival that will attract competitors and visitors in their thousands.
"This is the first time the Eisteddfod has returned to the capital since 2018 – we're looking forward to a period of working with local communities – anyone interested in being part of the team is welcome to register online or come to the public meeting in Cardiff.
"We look forward to welcoming some of the 2018 Eisteddfod team back, and to attracting a new group of people to join us over the coming months.
