Communities across Merseyside came together on Thursday evening to celebrate Bonfire Night, with fireworks displays, bonfires and festivities lighting up the skies.
The annual November 5 tradition commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and assassinate King James I. More than 400 years on, the date is marked across the country with spectacular fireworks displays and bonfires.
Events across the region
Among the events taking place this evening, Southport FC hosted a Bonfire Night spectacular, with In Demand Radio presenter Claire Simmo leading the celebrations. Gates opened at 6pm, ahead of a fireworks display by Bright Sparks at 8pm.
The Horse and Jockey pub on Waddicar Lane, Melling, also welcomed visitors to a free event featuring a funfair and fireworks display. In Woolton, The Elephant pub on Woolton Street brought the community together with live music, hot food and a fireworks display.
