Liverpool's Premier League fixture list has been revealed, and it could give Alexander Isak the perfect opportunity to make a statement. The Reds now know they will face Newcastle United on the opening day of the 2026/27 season, offering the Swedish striker a chance to kickstart his career at Anfield.
Opening Day Clash at St James' Park
Andoni Iraola will begin his Liverpool tenure as manager with an away trip to Newcastle United on August 23, as part of Sky Sports' first Super Sunday lineup. Isak, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle in a £125 million deadline-day move last summer, will likely have his eye on that fixture.
Isak's Injury-Plagued Debut Season
Injury and fitness issues prevented Isak from replicating his Newcastle success in his debut season at Liverpool. The 26-year-old made 22 appearances but only 13 starts under former head coach Arne Slot, scoring four goals. He will be determined to improve those numbers this campaign.
World Cup Form and Pre-Season Plans
Isak is currently with Sweden at the World Cup in North America, where he has already scored his first goal of the tournament in a 5-1 win over Tunisia. After Sweden's involvement ends, he will return for pre-season training, eager to work with new manager Iraola.
As it stands, Isak is Liverpool's only senior fit center forward for the start of the season, with Hugo Ekitike recovering from an Achilles injury and Jayden Danns battling to return to full fitness. Barring any new signings or injury setbacks, Isak is expected to start against his former club on the opening day.
Liverpool will hope Isak returns to the AXA Training Centre ready to go, and a goal or two against Newcastle would provide the perfect start to the season.
