The Duchess of Sussex has made her first public appearances since the birth of her daughter Lilibet three months ago, with a series of outfit choices in New York that a fashion expert has described as demonstrating "dominance and control".
During the visit, Meghan and Prince Harry paid their respects at the One World Observatory, where the Duchess wore a dark ensemble of black wide-leg trousers, a dark navy roll-neck jumper, and a tailored navy coat, with her hair scraped back in a low bun. Stylist Harriet Davey said the look was "far removed from the fitted, colourful outfits she once wore as a royal" and showed that Meghan has "taken control back" over her appearances.
At a visit to PS 123 Mahalia Jackson school in Harlem, Meghan chose a red cashmere coat and matching trousers by Loro Piana, worth £4,275 and £1,229 respectively. Davey described the "dominant punchy red outfit" as making a case for autumn tonal dressing, with a slouchy fit that suits her new life away from royal engagements.
For the Global Citizen Live concert in Central Park, she wore a floral-embroidered Valentino mini dress priced at £1,850, which Davey said had a "daring edge" and symbolised "new beginnings". The stylist also noted that the Dior bag she carried was a nod to Diana, Princess of Wales, reflecting a connection between their personal styles.
At the UN headquarters, Meghan opted for a two-tone tan outfit with a camel Max Mara coat costing £1,580. Davey said the tailored silhouette kept the visit professional, while the structured updo and simple gold jewellery completed a look that would not be out of place in a corporate office.
