Heidi Klum Exposes Pregnancy Discrimination in Fashion Industry

German supermodel Heidi Klum, 52, is speaking candidly about the discrimination she encountered throughout her pregnancies while working in the fashion world. The mother of four children – Leni, 21, with Flavio Briatore, and Henry, 20, Johan, 19, and Lou, 16, with ex-husband Seal – revealed these experiences during a recent Paper magazine interview alongside her daughter Leni and son Henry.

Client Rejection During Pregnancy

Klum shared a particularly stark memory of one client who abruptly stopped working with her during pregnancy. 'They thought that I was not sexy anymore, because I was now a mother,' Klum explained. 'I was defined before children as being a sexy woman, and now with a child, as being a mom.' She elaborated that this client believed she no longer deserved to maintain her previous image, effectively stripping her of that professional identity.

Challenges on Project Runway

The blonde beauty also recalled her time hosting the fashion competition series Project Runway from 2004 to 2017, during which she faced significant practical challenges while expanding her family. 'I was pregnant with all my kids always on the show,' Klum remembered, noting that pregnancy was rarely visible on television at that time.

This visibility issue created a wardrobe dilemma: 'Pregnancy clothes were really hard to find at the time,' she said. This scarcity directly inspired Klum to launch her own maternity line. 'I'm on the stage, I'm on TV, and it's a show about fashion, I need to have good things!' she emphasized, rejecting the notion that pregnant women should hide from public view.

Industry Evolution Through Generations

Klum's daughter Leni, who has followed her mother into modeling, reflected on how the fashion industry has transformed since her mother's early career. 'I think there's definitely been a major shift,' Leni observed. 'Before, with my mom's generation, it was a stricter kind of criteria you needed to fit into, and I think a lot has changed now.' She believes this evolution has created opportunities for more diverse individuals to enter the industry.

Family Support and Confidence Building

Klum's personal life has seen significant chapters, including her marriage to Seal from 2005 to 2014 and her current marriage to Tokio Hotel musician Tom Kaulitz, 36. Her children continue to benefit from her positive influence, particularly in building self-confidence.

In a recent Elle Germany cover story, son Henry shared how his mother 'instilled a lot of confidence in him' as he pursues his own modeling career. Beyond practical advice about posture, Klum's philosophical approach has been impactful. 'I'm a positive person,' Klum stated. 'I believe you can work on your attitude towards yourself and life.' She acknowledged occasional self-doubt but emphasized her ability to return to positive energy.

Heidi Klum's revelations highlight both the historical prejudices within fashion and the progressive changes occurring, driven in part by her own experiences and advocacy for maternity visibility and inclusion.
