Shoppers at Newcastle's Grainger Market will witness a major fashion first on Saturday, as the iconic location is transformed into a catwalk for a landmark public showcase.
The event, running from 12-2pm, is organised in collaboration with the BFC and Newcastle City Council. It celebrates the North East's distinctive creative identity, established design voices and its next generation of talent.
A landmark showcase at a Geordie landmark
Grainger Market holds a special place in Geordie folklore, having served generations of shoppers for years. Beyond its traditional cafes, the Market has become a hotspot for food vendors serving cuisine from all over the world while keeping things local. On Saturday, it will be fashion designs giving everyone plenty of food for thought.
The pioneering event will spotlight the winning designs from Future Heritage, Eldon Square's 50th-anniversary initiative created in partnership with Newcastle College and Fenwick Newcastle. Following an industry brief, 80 Newcastle College students created original fashion and textile designs inspired by Newcastle's heritage. The garment-design winners will now see their work brought to life on the runway.
Award-winning designer joins the lineup
They will be joined by an exclusive catwalk show from award-winning Newcastle designer and Newcastle College University Centre alumnus Lamin Gibba, founder of high-end streetwear label Jerry J Clothing.
