Radio presenter Dee Salmin has revealed the astonishing secret behind the dazzling gown she wore to last week's ARIA Awards: the entire dress was crafted from oranges grown in her designer's back garden.
The Sustainable Fashion Statement
The 31-year-old Triple J host, who is dating Collingwood football star Darcy Moore, turned heads on the red carpet at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion in the glittering sequined creation. Designed by sustainable fashion pioneer Amy Cottrell, the dress featured handmade bioplastic sequins derived entirely from oranges sourced from Cottrell's family farm.
Salmin took to Instagram on Monday to share the innovative process behind the garment's creation. 'The sequins are biodegradable (you can even eat them) made from oranges from her garden,' Salmin wrote on her Instagram story, alongside a clip showing Cottrell's intricate work.
How the Edible Dress Was Made
In the revealing video, Cottrell demonstrates her unique production method, showing how she created a resin from the homegrown oranges. The designer is seen pouring the resin into thin sheets, cooling the material, and then painstakingly cutting out each individual orange disk.
These edible, biodegradable sequins were then hand-stitched together to form the stunning mini-dress that captured attention at Australia's premier music awards ceremony. Cottrell captioned her video: 'Making a bioplastic sequin dress. This mini dress is made from handmade bioplastic sequins (edible and biodegradable) in several shades of orange using a natural dye created from oranges from my family farm!!'
The sustainable designer, known for using recycled and deadstock materials, announced that the innovative creation would be 'made to order and available online soon' for fashion-forward environmentalists.
A Growing Romance and Red Carpet Style
The ARIA Awards appearance continues a series of high-profile red carpet moments for Salmin and her AFL partner. In September, the radio host dazzled at the Brownlow Medal awards in a glamorous long white gown featuring a keyhole cutout beneath the bust.
Following that event, Moore penned a sweet tribute to his girlfriend on Instagram, stating: 'I am extremely in love with you.' Their elegant appearances have sparked speculation among fans, with one commenting that their coordinated looks were 'giving wedding vibes.'
The couple, who confirmed their relationship at the 2023 ARIA Awards, recently enjoyed a romantic getaway to Thailand, further fuelling engagement rumours after Moore shared a series of intimate holiday snaps with the caption 'Bangkok rocked my socks.'
While remaining private about their relationship details, Salmin recently demonstrated her quick wit when responding to an inappropriate social media comment about the pair, showcasing the same confidence she brings to her groundbreaking fashion choices.
