Brown mascara has become a dominant trend in the makeup world, with many people switching from black to brown for their daily look. Makeup artist and businesswoman Aimee Connolly has shared the reasons behind this shift, explaining that brown mascara provides a softer, more natural-looking definition than black without overpowering your features.

Brown sits opposite blue on the colour wheel, which makes blue eyes look brighter and more vibrant. For green or hazel eyes, the warm undertones in brown mascara highlight the golden, olive, and green flecks in these irises.
Connolly said she "never thought" she'd "become quite so passionate about brown mascara," but it is now one of her "favourite products for everyday makeup."
Makeup artist's take on the brown mascara trend
Connolly explained: "For so long, black mascara was considered the only real option. It creates immediate impact, definition and drama, and I still absolutely love it, but it is always nice to switch things up now and again."
She added: "Lots of us probably find ourselves wearing brown during the day, it's definitely claimed the more natural daytime title – and with good reason. It's actually one of the reasons we developed MyMascara in both Brown and Black. I wanted people to have different options depending on the look they wanted to achieve."
Benefits of brown mascara and whether to ditch black
Connolly said the "biggest benefit" of brown mascara is that it "enhances your lashes" without "overpowering the rest of your makeup." It "blends more seamlessly" when wearing more casual makeup. "If you're wearing glowing skin, soft bronzer and natural tones, a brown mascara can often complement the overall look better than a stronger black mascara," she said.
She continued: "I think that's one of the reasons we're seeing such a shift towards it. Beauty trends have become much more focused on enhancing your features rather than masking them, and brown mascara fits perfectly into that movement. I also find it incredibly flattering across all age groups. The softer contrast around the eye area can sometimes create a fresher, more effortless finish than a traditional black mascara."
Connolly will not be ditching black mascara altogether, as she will reach for it when she wants something more dramatic. "For me, it simply comes down to choosing the right product for the right moment," she urged.
She explained: "If you've never tried brown mascara, I'd genuinely encourage you to give it a go. Most people are surprised by how much impact it still delivers. The key is ensuring you go for a rich brown tone so that you're still getting the impact you need. When it's right, it brightens the eyes, enhances the lashes and creates that effortless, polished finish that works so beautifully for everyday makeup."
