Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue for nearly 25 years, has made clear she would rather see Michelle Obama on the cover than Theresa May. Speaking at an event in London, Shulman said she is concentrating on securing Mrs Obama for the magazine, to applause from the audience.
The comments came during an onstage interview with lawyer Miriam González Durántez at Kings Place, part of Jewish Book Week, where Shulman was promoting her book, Inside Vogue: A Diary of My 100th Year. The discussion turned to Theresa May's reported appearance in the April issue of US Vogue, with Shulman casting doubt on whether the Prime Minister had secured a cover slot. "That's not entirely clear," she said. "I'm not sure whether she is [on the cover]."
Asked why May was not appearing in British Vogue instead, Shulman said she had not asked her. When the conversation moved to Melania Trump, Shulman was dismissive of a potential cover. "I don't know about Melania on a cover," she said. "But she's not First Lady yet. I think I'd rather concentrate on trying to get Michelle Obama."
Despite her preference, Shulman was quick to clarify there was no ill feeling towards May. "She's very nice," Shulman said. "On Desert Island Discs she said she'd like a lifetime subscription to Vogue as her luxury item. So before she became Prime Minister I arranged that."
