Johannes Radebe's Magnetic Stage Presence Elevates Kinky Boots Musical
Johannes Radebe, widely known as Jojo from Strictly Come Dancing, proves to be a born performer in the West End production of Kinky Boots: The Musical at the London Coliseum. His utterly magnetic stage presence and captivating dance moves make him the perfect fit for the role of drag queen Lola, bringing stratospheric levels of charisma to a show that otherwise leans towards the pedestrian.
A Brilliant Cast and Vibrant Production
The musical, based on the 2005 film inspired by a real-life Northampton shoe factory that pivoted to making thigh-high boots for drag queens, is a riot of feathers and sparkle. Designers Robert Jones and Tom Rogers go all out on costumes, creating a visually stunning backdrop. Radebe's entrances are particularly breathtaking, such as when he rises from a trapdoor in a floor-length crimson gown and curly blond wig, evoking icons like Diana Ross and Whitney Houston.
Opposite Lola's otherworldly glamour is the everyman character Charlie Price, played by understudy Liam Doyle due to Matt Cardle's illness. Charlie is a likable but directionless figure pulled back to his family's ailing shoe factory after his father's death. A chance encounter with Lola leads to a mad scheme to save the business, blending culture clash comedy with warm, good-humoured explorations of gender, sexuality, and themes like fathers and sons, expectations, and acceptance.
Strengths and Weaknesses in Storytelling and Music
Harvey Fierstein's book for the musical often relies on "tell don't show" exposition, such as when Charlie's fiancee declares her ambitions. Cyndi Lauper's songs, including the notable Sex Is in the Heel, drive the show with poppy and rocky energy, though the lyrics can feel predictable. Director Nikolai Foster ensures the cast does and says the right things, but the production lacks moments that transcend the literal, except in highlights like a sizzling pasodoble between Lola and antagonist Don, played by Billy Roberts.
Radebe's Performance and Supporting Cast
While not a trained actor, Radebe's rich vocal tone and rare charisma shine through, especially in dance sequences where he animates every moment with Latin flair in Leah Hill's choreography. He delivers a moving rendition of Not My Father's Son in near stillness, showcasing heartfelt emotion. The cast receives full-throttle support from Courtney Bowman as factory worker Lauren and Scott Paige as foreman George, who adds humour and sass.
Overall, Kinky Boots offers an enjoyable night out with a brilliantly unlikely story, but in terms of musical theatre craft, it remains somewhat pedestrian. The production runs at the London Coliseum until 11 July, providing a vibrant if not groundbreaking theatrical experience.
