Hunstanton, a small Norfolk seaside town with a population of just 4,500, has been named the UK's best destination for fish and chips, according to new research by Simply Sea Views. The UK Fish and Chip Destination Index analysed up to 50 coastal towns, ranking them on fish and chip shop density, customer ratings, review volumes, seafront locations, independent ownership, and award recognition. Hunstanton emerged as the overall winner, surpassing well-known favourites such as Whitby, Scarborough, and Blackpool.
High Concentration of Independently Owned Chippies
Despite its modest size, Hunstanton boasts a high concentration of fish and chip shops, all independently owned, with consistently high food quality. The town's top-rated establishments on Tripadvisor include Elliot's Fish & Chips, Fishers Of Hunstanton, Henry's Of Hunstanton, and Sally's Fish and Chips. Most of these takeaways and restaurants are located close to or along the seafront, offering diners expansive views of the beach and sea.
One customer at Elliot's Fish & Chips wrote: "Absolutely fantastic. Served up fresh and cooked to perfection. Staff serving were polite and appreciative of your business. Prices are reasonable and certainly worth the visit if you’re in the area." Meanwhile, diners at Fishers Of Hunstanton described their food as "perfect," adding: "Fish 'n' chips cooked to perfection. Yummy curry sauce and gravy. Service very friendly and well organised. 10/10 all round."
Smaller Towns Outperform Larger Rivals
Matt Fox, CEO at Simply Sea Views, commented: "Everyone in the UK has a firm opinion about where to find the best fish and chips. It's one of those debates that people take surprisingly seriously. What surprised us most was the success of smaller seaside towns. Hunstanton isn't the first place most people would name when asked where to find the country's best fish and chips, but the data makes a compelling case."
The research indicates that size matters, with several smaller coastal towns outperforming larger, more famous destinations. Hunstanton's victory underscores the appeal of lesser-known gems for foodies seeking a quintessentially British seaside experience.
Two Distinct Beaches for Enjoying Fish and Chips
Hunstanton offers two distinct beaches along the Norfolk coast. Hunstanton Main Beach is bustling with activity and conveniently close to the chippies, though visitors are warned about thieving seagulls. Old Hunstanton Beach, in contrast, is a more natural and tranquil spot popular with dog walkers, kite surfers, windsurfers, and paddleboarders, providing a peaceful escape from the crowds.
