George RR Martin is working on another Game of Thrones book, but not the one fans have been waiting for. The author is writing the fourth Dunk and Egg novella, which will be adapted into a future season of HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Martin Prioritizes Dunk and Egg Over Winds of Winter
The news was revealed by Ira Parker, showrunner of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Parker said: “I’d love to expand it from three seasons to maybe four or five. Book four, which George is working on, takes place in a very cool location.”
Martin has previously stated he would write the fourth Dunk and Egg story after finishing The Winds of Winter and the fifth after A Dream of Spring. However, he is now working on it despite neither of those books being completed.
Fans React with Despair
The news has caused frustration among fans of the A Song of Ice and Fire series. On the ASOIAF Reddit, one of the top-voted comments read: “We’re NEVER getting Winds of Winter. Never.”
It has been seven years since Game of Thrones concluded, and Martin has been writing The Winds of Winter since 2011. The time between now and the last book in the series is longer than the time it took Martin to write the first five books.
