Elliot Page to Introduce All-Trans Shakespeare Production Before London Pride
Elliot Page Backs All-Trans Shakespeare Show Before London Pride

Oscar-nominated actor Elliot Page has declared that Shakespeare's timeless stories have always belonged to trans people, as he prepares to introduce a groundbreaking all-trans and non-binary production of As You Like It. This landmark theatrical event is scheduled to premiere on the eve of London Trans+ Pride in July 2026, marking a significant moment for visibility and representation in British theatre.

A Historic Production with Global Reach

Elliot Page, renowned for roles in Juno, Inception, and the upcoming Christopher Nolan adaptation of The Odyssey, will appear live from New York to launch the premiere on 24 July 2026 at The Space Theatre in London. The performance will be simultaneously livestreamed to audiences worldwide, ensuring broad accessibility. This initiative represents a bold step forward, with a second staging of Twelfth Night planned for Barcelona on 1st August, both shows also being streamed in New York, marking the company's first international expansion beyond the UK.

Elliot Page's Vision for Shakespeare

In a powerful statement, Elliot Page emphasised the enduring relevance of Shakespeare's work. "Shakespeare wrote characters who defy easy categories long before we had language for it - and that feels as relevant now as it ever has," Page said. "Trans What You Will is proving that these stories have always belonged to us, and I'm honoured to support that work. Can't wait to share this with an audience." This production builds on the success of Trans What You Will Theatre's inaugural event in July 2025, a rehearsed reading of Twelfth Night introduced by Sir Ian McKellen, which sold over 2,300 tickets and raised £8,000 for the trans charity Not a Phase.

Staging Details and Community Impact

The production is organised by Trans What You Will Theatre in collaboration with The Space Theatre, London, spanning three evenings: previews on 22 and 23 July, followed by the premiere on 24 July 2026. A special matinee performance will be offered exclusively to LGBTQ+ individuals under 25 and youth organisations across London, promoting inclusivity and support for younger audiences. As You Like It, Shakespeare's comedic exploration of cross-dressing, mistaken identity, and gender-fluid desire, provides compelling material for this innovative approach, positioning trans and non-binary performers at the narrative's core.

Director's Perspective on Gender and Joy

Director Phoebe Kemp, who uses they/them pronouns and helmed both productions, expressed enthusiasm for the project. "I am delighted to be back directing another of Shakespeare's gendery plays for Trans What You Will! I am so excited to dive into all the queerness and gender exploration within As You Like It," Kemp commented. "The trans community is still facing worsening oppression worldwide, and the opportunity to counter that with joy is an honour. Can't wait to share with you all what we create!" The cast and creative team represent a diverse spectrum of the trans and non-binary communities, including variations in race, disability, and class.

Accessibility and Ticket Information

Tickets for the evening shows and global livestream are now available, featuring a sliding scale pricing structure to ensure maximum accessibility for all audiences. Remaining matinee seats will be allocated through a free lottery system for those under 25, after priority is given to LGBTQ+ youth organisations throughout London. This production not only celebrates artistic innovation but also fosters community engagement and support during a time of global challenges for trans rights.
