A popular food and drink blogger has criticised a pub in Dumfries and Galloway for serving the "worst tasting pint" she has "ever had in Scotland". In a scathing review posted onto social media, the influencer claimed that her Guinness was "absolutely foul" and tasted "unclean".
Blogger's Scathing Review
On Sunday, August 9, Girl Drinks Guinness shared a review of her pint of The Black Stuff at The Gretna Inn in Dumfries and Galloway. The Instagram account, which has more than 35,000 followers, is run by Glasgow-based blogger Sarah Love and sees her review pints of the Irish stout and other beers across the UK and beyond.
The Gretna Inn is a hotel that is situated just off the M6 motorway, approximately two minutes from the Gretna Gateway Outlet shopping centre on foot. The inn features both a restaurant and a bar, with the latter serving a wide selection of beers, spirits, soft drinks, and more.
Pint Rated Zero Out of 10
Giving the Guinness at the venue a rating of zero out of 10, Love stated that she has "genuinely never had a pint that tasted as bad as this one". She criticised the stout for tasting "completely unclean" and stated that she could only have two sips of the drink before she had to "give up".
Additionally, the food and drink blogger claimed that her pint had a "crust on the foam" that caused it to stick to the glass while she was drinking it. Love added that there were "grease splatters" on her glass that resulted in the Guinness "bubbling" in unexpected ways.
Blogger's Account of the Incident
Posting on the Girl Loves Guinness Instagram account, Love wrote: "Right guys, usual disclaimer before I do this review! I am only reviewing the pint I was served and not the pub. Before you read this, look through the photos."
"In all the years of reviewing pints on this page, I have genuinely never had a pint that tasted as bad as this one, and to the point it made me actually gag. It was absolutely foul and just tasted completely unclean! I managed two mouthfuls and had to give up!"
"I have never seen a pint develop a crust on the foam when it sticks to the glass (pic three) and genuinely I have no idea what causes this! The top of the lacing on the glass actually started to dry out! How bad does a pint have to be to do this? Is it dirty lines that would cause this? Dirty glasses?"
Love continued: "On top of this, there were full grease splatters at random point on the inside of the glass that caused bubbling on each specific bit (pic two) and again, I’ve never seen this before! It was honestly gross."
Pub Praised Despite Criticism
While Love was very critical of the pint of Guinness she received at The Gretna Inn, she stressed that her review was not of the pub itself but only the stout. She even described the Dumfries and Galloway pub as "beautiful" overall, and stated that the venue "has potential".
The blogger added: "Now please don’t come at me for this review, as always my reviews are honest and this was done as a paying customer, but to have a pint where the lacing on the glass starts to crust over is mind blowing! It’s a beautiful pub too and has potential, but my god, please sort this out."
