Massive queues stretched down Collingwood Street in Newcastle city centre this week as revellers lined up to get into city centre bars, with the return of students marking a busy start to the new term.
By mid-September, Newcastle city centre becomes noticeably busier as returning students head back to Tyneside to continue their studies and new students move in to start their degrees. Freshers Week is a significant event in Newcastle, with activities taking place across bars, clubs and other venues, including Eldon Square, which will host its annual Student Shopping Night later this month.
Sold-out Tropiloco event draws huge crowds
On Monday, many students headed out for their first big night of the new term at Tropiloco, described as the biggest student event in Newcastle. Every Monday, Tropiloco takes over all eight rooms of The Social Club, and after announcing on social media that all tickets were sold out for its return on September 14, queues outside were enormous.
The line of people stretched past all of its Collingwood Street neighbours, down past Revolution bar, past Nando's and even further as more people arrived.
Organisers celebrate 'biggest returners event'
Sharing footage of the lines on Instagram on Tuesday, Tropiloco celebrated its 'biggest returners event' ever, writing: 'We're absolutely astounded by your support, that was straight up OBSCENE, we have no words…'
'The ENERGY across all the 8 rooms was at an all time high straight from the earlier 10:30pm opening to late 3am close. We next meet on Monday the 21st & Tuesday the 22nd for our Newcastle & Northumbria collingwood street party.'
