Kane's Voice Fails After Thrilling Victory
England captain Harry Kane was forced to abruptly end a post-match interview with the BBC after losing his voice following the dramatic 3-2 World Cup win over co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Kane netted the decisive goal in a rollercoaster triumph that saw 10-man England book their place in the quarter-finals against Norway.
In the immediate aftermath of the final whistle, after celebrating with supporters, Kane participated in a BBC interview. However, it soon became clear that he had lost his voice, causing his responses to sound unusually high-pitched. Fans quickly took to social media to joke about the situation.
One fan quipped: "90 mins at the Azteca Stadium and Harry Kane turned into Mickey Mouse!" Another said: "Harry Kane turns into Mickey Mouse after England's win over Mexico." A third laughed: "Harry Kane channels his inner Mickey Mouse!"
Kane Admits 'My Voice Has Gone'
During the interview, Kane admitted: "My voice has gone!" Coughing and clearing his throat, he continued: "It was a crazy game... we had to fight, we had to find something. I've just been singing there, I can't really talk but..." He added: "All the occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way."
As he brought the interview to an end, he said: "Incredible, unbelievable support, speechless, I can't even talk!" The BBC interviewer replied: "Go and rest that voice, Harry."
England Overcome Adversity at Altitude
England had to overcome hostility, altitude, and a red card for Jarell Quansah as Thomas Tuchel's side edged the contest. The match started an hour late due to bad weather at the Estadio Azteca, which sits 2,200 metres above sea level. Jude Bellingham’s quickfire brace silenced the home supporters, but Julian Quinones pulled one back before half-time.
Mexican belief grew when right-back Quansah was sent off for a clumsy challenge early in the second half. However, Tuchel’s team immediately responded through skipper Kane’s spot-kick after Anthony Gordon was brought down. Raul Jimenez added a penalty of his own after Kane accidentally booted Brian Gutierrez in the box, increasing English nerves. Yet the visitors showed defensive nous and togetherness to win on a wild night in Mexico City.
Quarter-Final Date with Norway
A date with Norway in Miami is the reward as England kept their quest for World Cup glory alive. The victory also helped avenge Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ on their return to the Azteca after 40 years. England will face Norway on Saturday evening in the quarter-finals.
