Shane Meadows' 2004 revenge thriller Dead Man's Shoes, hailed by fans as one of the best films ever made, will be screened on Film4 tonight at 10.50pm. The low-budget British tragedy, filmed in just three weeks in Matlock, Derbyshire, continues to shock viewers years after its release.
A Grim and Engaging Revenge Thriller
The film follows Richard, a man who returns to his hometown after serving in the British Army. Upon his return, he seeks revenge on the group of drug dealers who horribly abused his mentally impaired brother, Anthony. He torments each member of the group in disturbing ways, turning himself into a cold-blooded killer, only to realise the monster he has become.
Despite its modest budget, the film delivers, proving that fine acting, a taut script and inventive direction can compensate for funding limitations. The cast includes Paddy Considine as Richard, Toby Kebbell in his first film feature, Gary Stretch, Stuart Wolfenden and Neil Bell.
Critical and Fan Acclaim
A fan review on Rotten Tomatoes described it as "A grim and thoroughly engaging revenge thriller, I enjoyed it a great deal, especially the performances of Paddy Considine and Toby Kebbell." Another review stated: "Gritty. Harrowing. Gripping. Haunting. This movie shook me to my core. A movie of depth, guilt, violence, and fear. You'll run through every emotion on the spectrum."
Paddy Considine won Best British Actor at the 2005 Empire Awards for his role, beating Simon Pegg for Shaun of the Dead and Daniel Craig for Layer Cake. The film itself was nominated across eight categories at the British Independent Film Awards.
