As the beloved romantic drama Me Before You soars into Netflix's top three most-watched films, fans are keen to discover the real-world backdrops that brought the story to life. The film, starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, may be set in a fictional English town, but its production took cast and crew across the UK and into Europe.
From Welsh Castles to Oxfordshire Manors
While the story unfolds in the fictional town of Stokebridge, the primary filming for the picturesque hometown scenes took place in Pembrokeshire, Wales. A key location is the grand Traynor Estate, with its grounds portrayed by the historic Pembroke Castle. This iconic fortress, dating back to 1093, is famed as the birthplace of King Henry VII.
However, the Traynor family home itself, Grantchester House, is not part of the castle. This stately home is actually Wytham Abbey, a private manor house located in Oxfordshire. In stark contrast, the exterior of the Clark family's more modest home was filmed in Harrow, north London, with interiors likely shot on a studio set.
European Escapes: Surrey to Spain
The film's poignant narrative includes a trip to a Dignitas clinic in Switzerland. In a surprising twist for the production, these emotionally charged scenes were filmed not abroad, but at a private home in Esher, Surrey, saving the crew a lengthy overseas journey.
For Lou and Will's exotic holiday to Mauritius, the production headed to sunnier climes, but not to the Indian Ocean. The beach and hotel scenes were actually shot in Mallorca, Spain, in and around the luxurious Barceló Formentor Hotel. Authenticity did prevail for the Parisian finale, however, with Clarke filmed reading the letter outside the real Restaurant Paul on Place Dauphine, near the Pont Neuf.
A Streaming Success Story
Based on Jojo Moyes's bestselling 2012 novel, Me Before You has found a massive new audience on Netflix since its addition in early January 2026. The story of Lou Clark's transformative relationship with Will Traynor continues to resonate, driving viewer curiosity about the beautiful locations that frame their journey. The film's rapid ascent to the number three spot on Netflix's most-watched list underscores its enduring appeal.
