Many film lovers argue for a Best Animal Performer category, citing past greats like Uggie the terrier from The Artist and Rin Tin Tin, who received the most votes for Best Actor at the first Oscars in 1929 but was not awarded due to concerns about a dog winning. This year, several dogs have delivered memorable performances: Sayuri the pit bull in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Manhattan the chihuahua in Hustlers, and Shelby the pit bull mix in A Dog’s Way Home, who was rescued from a landfill in Tennessee. In Parasite, Zoonie, Berry, and Foofoo play pampered pets, while two German shepherds in Knives Out have a pivotal role in solving the crime.
