Ralph Fiennes to Star as Sir Henry Cecil in Biopic Unbeaten

Ralph Fiennes is set to portray legendary racehorse trainer Sir Henry Cecil in a Hollywood-backed biopic titled Unbeaten. The three-time Oscar nominee will also serve as an executive producer on the project, which reunites him with Conclave producer Tessa Ross and is scheduled to begin shooting in 2027.

Creative Team Behind the Film

The screenplay for the movie has been written by Bash Doran, with German BAFTA-winning filmmaker Nora Fingsheidt attached to direct. Journalist Tony Rushmer, author of The Triumph of Henry Cecil: The Authorized Biography, is serving as a consultant on the film.

Cecil, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 2011, became one of the sport's most successful trainers, claiming the champion trainer title ten times and winning 25 British Classics.

Cecil's Career and Comeback

After falling out with Sheikh Mohammed, the sport's most powerful owner, Cecil endured six seasons without a Group 1 victory, and his stable numbers dwindled. Yet in his final years, he managed to rebuild his career and life following personal heartbreak, tabloid scandal, and health crises.

His training of the great Frankel brought him back to the top, with the colt becoming one of the greatest horses of all time, winning all 14 of his starts, including ten at Group 1 level.

Fiennes on the Role

Speaking to Deadline, Fiennes said: "I knew nothing about the legendary Henry Cecil until I read Bash Doran's screenplay. I was compelled and moved by it and by Henry's story with the great horse Frankel. Henry was — and still is — a unique figure, complex and competitive in the very specific world of horse racing."

He added: "I'm delighted to be reunited with Tessa Ross (producer) and to be working alongside Rory Aitken (producer) and Studiocanal. I'm particularly excited to be collaborating with Nora Fingscheidt. Her intensely immersive approach and desire for authenticity is inspiring. I was blown away by her film The Outrun."

After Frankel's final victory in the 2012 Champion Stakes, Cecil said: "He's the best I've ever had, the best I've ever seen. I'd be very surprised if there's ever been anything better." Cecil died in June 2013 at age 70, seven years after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.
