BBC viewers watching Race Against the Tide on iPlayer may recognise judge Sadie Clayton, an artist known for her vibrant pink hair and bold fashion. The new series, filmed in Scotland, arrived on BBC iPlayer on August 17, with the first episode also airing on BBC Scotland at 8.30pm.
Who is Sadie Clayton?
Sadie is a 35-year-old artist specialising in copper sculptures. She describes herself as a cultural communicator, sculptor and fashion academic, with a career spanning both art and fashion. Originally from West Yorkshire, she now lives in east London with her husband and their two-year-old son. The couple have been together since Sadie was 17 and married three years ago. She also runs her own children's clothing label, Playing Out, which launched earlier this year.
Sadie Clayton's TV past
Sadie is no stranger to television. She previously competed on Sky Arts' Landmark, a competition where artists vie to design Britain's next major public artwork. She has also sat on the judging panel for CBBC's Britain's Best Young Artist. Her growing screen presence and distinctive style make her a familiar face to many viewers.
What is Race Against the Tide?
All six episodes of Race Against the Tide are available on BBC iPlayer. The series, presented by comedian Iain Stirling, follows pairs of contestants as they race to build the most impressive sand sculptures within a six-hour window before the tide comes in. Only one member of each duo is a professional sculptor; their partner is a complete novice.
Based on a Canadian television format, the British version swaps Canada's Bay of Fundy for West Sands Beach in St Andrews. According to the BBC: "With just six hours before the tide rolls in, the teams must transform tonnes of sand into spectacular themed creations while battling the clock, the weather and each other."
Alongside fellow judge Jamie Wardley, Sadie assesses the finished creations. Speaking about her involvement, Sadie told the BBC: "It was a real honour to be asked to do this show. Having pivoted my career from being a fashionista that made sculptures for the body, where the body was my canvas and very much fusing fashion and art, to then solely now only working in the art world with my sculptures, this felt like another career highlight."
All episodes of Race Against the Tide are now streaming on BBC iPlayer. Episodes will also air tonight on BBC Scotland at 8.30pm.
