A critically acclaimed crime drama, often described as 'perfect' by its devoted fanbase, has found a new digital home in the United Kingdom. Lie to Me, which originally aired from 2009 to 2011, is now available to stream for free on ITVX, much to the delight of viewers who had been clamouring for its return.
A Cult Classic Resurfaces
The series stars Tim Roth as Dr. Cal Lightman, a world-renowned deception expert who, alongside clinical psychologist Dr. Gillian Foster, portrayed by Kelli Williams, leads The Lightman Group. Together, they assist local and federal authorities in solving cases by decoding microexpressions and body language to uncover the truth hidden behind lies.
The ensemble cast also includes Brendan Hines, Monica Raymund, Hayley McFarland, and Mekhi Phifer. The show's premise, blending psychological insight with crime-solving, earned it a dedicated following that has only grown since its premature cancellation after three seasons.
Fan Reactions: A Cry for More
Social media has been ablaze with praise and pleas for a revival. One enthusiast exclaimed, 'Just f***ing great TV. Reboot! Reboot!' while another lamented, 'I can't believe this show ended after 3 seasons. It's absolutely brilliant TV.' A third simply called it 'perfection.'
Another fan implored, 'Please bring this back!!! This show was fantastic and really needs to come back. Tim Roth was excellent.' The sentiment was echoed widely, with many arguing that the series 'deserves more than 3 seasons only' and calling it 'one of the best TV series I've seen.'
Behind the Scenes: Embracing the Character
In an interview during the show's initial run, Roth revealed that his character, Cal Lightman, evolved significantly from the early episodes. He noted that the producers were initially concerned about his English accent alienating American audiences. 'If you go back and look at the episodes in season one, they were much more worried about his English-ness,' Roth said. 'Whereas when a new production team came on board in season two, they embraced that.'
Roth also highlighted the quirky and comedic aspects of his role, stating, 'A lot of actors now whisper their way through their work, heading towards their pay cheque. I find that rather boring, so I've always looked for those aspects of a character.'
Where to Watch
All three seasons of Lie to Me are now available to stream on ITVX, offering both longtime fans and newcomers the chance to experience this 'under-appreciated gem' that, as one viewer put it, 'went too under the radar and was cancelled way too early.'
