Netflix's 'Straight to Hell' Dazzles as Fortune-Teller Drama

Netflix has released a visually stunning new drama series based on one of the most popular and controversial media figures in Japanese history. Straight to Hell stars Erika Toda as Kazuko Hosoki, Japan's most renowned fortune-teller who rose to fame through a bestselling book and numerous TV appearances.

From Fame to Infamy

Hosoki's success was eventually overshadowed by controversy, including accusations of spiritual scams and alleged ties to the Yakuza. During the early 2000s, her role as a judge on Iron Chef and her scathing catchphrase, 'you'll go to hell,' earned her the moniker 'Hell Lady' in Japan. The nine-part drama traces her life across 60 years, from her teenage years managing clubs and accumulating debts with organized crime groups.

Critical Acclaim

While Straight to Hell has limited reviews so far, the South China Morning Post praises Toda's lead performance as one of the most 'dazzling' of the year. 'Visually, Straight to Hell is a feast for the eyes, especially when it comes to Kazuko's stylish wardrobe that embodies the opulence of the times,' they note. 'Kazuko will always be a questionable figure, but the talent of Toda is beyond reproach. Her work here stands as one of the most memorable and affecting performances in recent memory.'

Leisurebyte agrees, calling Toda 'a force to be reckoned with' and noting she 'delivers a memorable and transformative performance of Kazuko through different stages of her life.' They add: 'Straight to Hell is a very engaging and interesting show, looking into the life of one of Japan's most controversial fortune tellers. It's bold, unsettling and portrays Hosoki's complex and layered life.'

Viewer Reactions

Netflix Junkie raves that the series is 'wickedly brilliant' and 'one of the most riveting character studies to arrive on the streaming platform,' adding it will make viewers 'put your phone down without realising you did it.' They tease: 'Without giving too much away: the final episode pays off everything the series has been building toward in a way that is deeply satisfying without being neat or sentimental. Whether this ending counts as justice or as proof that the universe has a very dark sense of humour is a question the show leaves entirely up to the audience.'

The series also features stellar performances from Tôko Miura (Drive My Car), Sairi Itô (Suzume), Kentarô Tamura (Norwegian Wood), and Ayumu Nakajima (Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy). Straight to Hell is available to stream on Netflix now.
