Netflix's latest romantic comedy, People We Meet on Vacation, takes viewers on a global journey, but the production was surprisingly limited to just two filming locations: Spain and the United States.
Based on Emily Henry's bestselling novel, the film follows unlikely best friends Alex (Tom Blyth) and Poppy (Emily Bader) who take a week-long summer trip together each year. Their decade-long tradition faces a turning point when they begin to question whether they might be perfect for each other romantically.
Director Brett Haley, known for adapting young adult novels, revealed that 65% of the film was shot in and around Barcelona, Spain. This included scenes set in New York City, Tuscany, Canada, and Ohio, all convincingly recreated using local locations. 'The biggest challenge was how to pull off Canada, Tuscany, New Orleans, Ohio, and New York City in the Barcelona area,' Haley told Netflix.
The remaining 40-50% of the film was shot in New Orleans, Louisiana, which doubled for the characters' small Ohio hometown and Boston. Haley admitted that 'a lot of invisible trickery' was used to make the locations convincing, aiming to give audiences the impression the cast travelled worldwide.
Fans spotted the crew filming in Lloret de Mar, Spain, for the final beach scene, and in New Orleans in October 2024. The film is now streaming on Netflix.
